After Todd Phillips’ Joker dominated the scene in last year’s awards, this year turned out lukewarm for comic-book/sci-fi/fantasy movies, as only Neon’s time-looping Palm Springs got a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It will have to face Borat Subsequent MoviefilmHamiltonMusic, and The Prom. Andy Samberg got a nomination for his role in Palm Springs for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The other nominees are Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), James Corden (The Prom), as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), and Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield).

There was disappointing news for one of  last year’s most ambitious genre projects, Tenet. Christopher Nolan’s movie only got nominated for Best Original Score – Motion Picture, thanks to Ludwig Göransson’s work. It will run against The Midnight Sky (Alexandre Desplat), News of the World (James Newton Howard), as well as Mank (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross), and Soul (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste).

The final results will become public knowledge during the 78th Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The bicoastal event will air live on Feb. 28.
