Shang-Chi Director Destin Daniel Cretton Talks Credit Scenes (SPOILERS)

WARNING: Do not read on if you don’t want to know what happens during the end credit scenes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!

Okay, so if you’re still reading, you probably have questions about those mid-credits and post-credits scenes. And director Destin Daniel Cretton (via Variety) has answers. Sort of.

In the mid-credits scene, Wong essentially welcomes Shang-Chi and Katy to the Avengers, via holo-conference with Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner. And Cretton deliberately chose those two. Captain Marvel, of course, is played by Brie Larson, whose breakthrough role was in Cretton’s Short Term 12, and who also worked with him on Just Cause and The Glass Castle.

“We talked about it being Brie, but we did not know that it could make plausible sense that Brie could be there,” Cretton says. “I mean, it obviously helps that we ended up landing on hologram versions of these characters so they can just step away and get back into whatever crazy stuff they’re dealing with. And I’m not even totally aware of what they’re dealing with. All I know is I pitch ideas, and the only time that ideas get kicked back is if it doesn’t make logical sense to other ideas that are percolating for those characters.”

As for Banner, now back to human form but still nursing a Stark Gauntlet-injured arm, Cretton seems to know more than he’ll say. But he does evince knowledge that something’s up there. “I don’t know,” he says. “Is that telling?” In any form, Banner’s one of the smartest guys in the MCU, but even he seems baffled by the Ten Rings’ origins. A natural assumption would be that if they’re over a millennium old, they could tie into Eternals somehow. Cretton knows, but he’s not telling…yet.

“Of course I know!” he says. “I mean, you know, I know enough — I know as much as anybody.”

As for the Ten Rings organization, the final post-credits scenes sees Xialing in charge and a promise that the group will return. But as to whether their goals are still criminal, Cretton stops short of fully confirming, saying, “I think that’s a fair assessment, if that’s what you think.”
