Uncharted’s Ruben Fleischer Reveals Plans For a Jak & Daxter Adaptation

Yet another Naughty Dog game is getting the big-(or small-) screen treatment with help from Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer. While speaking with Digital Trends, Fleischer let slip that he’s re-teaming with PlayStation to adapt the studio’s Jak & Daxter franchise.

Fleischer didn’t specify whether the project is being developed as a film or TV series. He also didn’t say if the titular heroes will appear in live-action or animation. But whatever the case, he sounds excited to introduce the characters to a wider audience.

“I’m actually working on Jak & Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation,” said Fleischer. “Which I think would be really cool to bring to life.”

Naughty Dog released the original Jak & Daxter (subtitled The Precursor Legacy) for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. The game follows the namesake characters after Daxter transforms from a human into an ottsel, (a cross between an otter and a weasel). During their quest to find the Dark Sage who could restore Daxter’s humanity, they encountered a variety of mystical threats. The game spawned two direct sequels along with a handful of spinoffs. The most recent entry, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, was released in 2009.

Interestingly, Uncharted star Tom Holland made headlines this week when he told GameSpot that he wanted to star as Jak in a live-action adaptation of the games, especially if indie powerhouse A24 was involved. It’s still not clear if he was kidding. But between potential Uncharted sequels and his likely return as Peter Parker in future Spider-Man films, it’s hard to imagine how he could manage to fit another franchise into his already busy schedule.

Naughty Dog is certainly having a moment in Hollywood right now. Aside from Uncharted, HBO is currently filming its own TV show based on The Last of Us. And if Jak & Daxter is successful, it could always lead to a revival of the game series that inspired it.
