Takashi Doscher Will Write Sony’s Ghost of Tsushima Film

Following Uncharted’s recent success at the box office, Sony is getting serious about its next video game adaptation. According to Deadline, the studio has enlisted Takashi Doscher to pen the script for Ghost of TsushimaGhost of Tsushima film.

Ghost of Tsushima was released on the PlayStation 4 to rave reviews in 2020. It sold over 2.4 million units worldwide in its first three days, which made it the console’s fastest selling first-party original IP debut. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the game took place in feudal Japan and cast players as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and the sole surviving member of his clan. When the Mongols invade his country, Jin sets aside his training and uses all-new tactics to bring his enemies to their knees. The film adaptation will be directed by John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski, who came aboard the project last year.

After writing an directing a string of short films, Doscher made his feature debut with Still, which premiered in 2018. He followed this up with 2019’s Only starring Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. Doscher’s next film, Blue, is a “twist on a Japanese monster movie,” which is in development at MGM.

Uncharted was the first movie released under Sony’s new PlayStation Productions banner. Although it received mixed reviews, the film has made over $383 million worldwide. In other words, Sony officially has a new franchise on its hands. On the TV side, the studio is currently in production on HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation and is also developing a series based on Twisted Metal. A Jak & Daxter project is reportedly in the works as well.

Stahelski is also producing Ghost of Tsushima through his 87Eleven Entertainment banner with Alex Young and Jason Spitz. Additionally, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will produce alongside executive producers Sucker Punch Productions. The studio hasn’t announced a release date for the film.
