The Latest on Jason Momoa’s DCU Future, If He’ll Play Aquaman or Lobo

Jason Momoa‘s DCU future has been up in the air for some time, but a new report suggests he could make an appearance as a new character in the future.

During the latest episode of The Hot Mic Podcast, Above the Line’s Jeff Sneider briefly touched on Jason Momoa’s DCU future. Referencing a tweet from director James Gunn that seemed to hint that Momoa may appear in the film, Sneider mentioned that speculation points to Momoa appearing in the upcoming film as Lobo.

“There is speculation that Lobo is going to show up in Superman: Legacy,” Sneider said. “And that Momoa is going to play Lobo.”

For months, rumors of Momoa potentially leaving the DC Universe, or even switching up roles and stepping down as Aquaman to play Lobo, have been floating around. Sneider went on to mention that due to Legacy ushering in a new era for DC Studios, this could be the time for Momoa to swap.

What is Jason Momoa’s future in the DC Universe?

Speaking earlier this year, Momoa himself said that he would “always be Aquaman,” but could also play other characters if the opportunity came up.

“I’ll always be Aquaman. Ain’t anyone coming in there and taking shit,” Momoa said. “There might be some other characters, too. I can play other things, too. I can be funny and savage and charming.”

In comments made this year, co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran said that Momoa has a place in the DCU “for many years to come,” and if it’s not as Aquaman, it’ll be as someone else.

“I look forward to working with Jason for many years to come,” said Safran. “I would be happy for it to be in Arthur Curry’s world, but if/when another opportunity came up, I’d find another great character for him to create…there are few superhero castings that are more perfect than Momoa as Aquaman.”

Momoa will next appear in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, which is set to premiere on December 20, 2023.
