Michael Fassbender Reflects on Playing Magneto: ‘I Think I Had a Great Run’

Michael Fassbender is satisfied with how his run as Magneto in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies turned out.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Fassbender was asked if he was happy with the results of his stint as Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr despite 2019’s Dark Phoenix receiving mixed reviews.

“You know, I think I had a great run,” Fassbender said. “I thoroughly enjoyed it. By the time Dark Phoenix was over — yeah, it was like … It was lucky, we had a fantastic run of it.”

When asked if he misses moving things with his mind, Fassbender joked, “No, the pressure was getting to me in the end, moving stuff all the time on demand, all these kids asking me to do it.”

What X-Men movies did Michael Fassbender star in?

Fassebender’s Magneto debuted in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Prior to that, an older version of the character had been portrayed by Ian McKellen in Fox’s original trilogy of X-Men movies. McKellen later reprised his role in 2013’s The Wolverine and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Fassbender also showed up as Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past before he then continued to reprise the role in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and 2019’s Dark Phoenix.

While Marvel Studios is steadily beginning to introduce mutants into the MCU, Fassbender has starred in two 2023 movies, David Fincher’s The Killer and Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins. He also started competing in auto racing in 2017 and currently drives for Proton Competition in the European Le Mans Series

Fassbender is now attached to David Sandberg’s Kung Fury 2, which serves as a sequel to 2015’s Kung Fury. In March 2023, IndieWire also revealed that Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who he’s married to, will star in a new movie together, Hope, directed by The Wailing’s Na Hong-jin.
