The Batman’s Jeffrey Wright Reveals He Hasn’t Seen a Script Yet for Part II

The Batman star Jeffrey Wright recently revealed that he is patiently waiting to receive the script for the fan-favorite DC movie’s forthcoming sequel, The Batman Part II.

“You’ve seen as much of a script as I have at this point,” the actor — who played GCPD Lieutenant James Gordon in 2022’s The Batman — told Entertainment Tonight. Wright also shared that he is hoping The Batman Part II doesn’t jump too far ahead from the events of the first movie, revealing that he would rather “go forward” with where they left off.

“Clearly, I’m Lieutenant Gordon at the end of the film, the first film, so we may be moving up in the ranks, I suppose, but I haven’t seen anything yet,” he added. “I’m being patient, letting [director] Matt Reeves do his thing — which is going to be magical and wonderful — and looking forward to diving back into it when the time comes.”

Why is The Batman not part of James Gunn’s DC Universe?

Directed and co-written by Reeves, The Batman follows Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) in his second year of crimefighting as Batman investigating a killer targeting Gotham’s elite. The superhero movie was a major critical and commercial success, grossing over $772 million worldwide.

When DC Studios announced that it would be creating a new shared universe, many fans expressed interest in seeing Reeves’ The Batman retroactively established as the first installment in this new DC Universe. However, DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently revealed on Threads that Reeves chose to keep his “BatVerse” separate from the DCU.

Following the success of The Batman, Warner Bros. quickly announced that a sequel was in development, with Reeves and Pattinson set to return as director and the title hero, respectively. Mattson Tomlin — who worked on the first movie’s script in an uncredited capacity — was confirmed to be co-writing the script for The Batman Part II with Reeves in August 2022.

The Penguin will bridge the gap between The Batman movies

Ahead of The Batman Part II, Warner Bros., DC Studios, and Reeves will release The Penguin on the Max streaming service in late 2024. The hotly-anticipated limited series will reportedly be set one week after the events of The Batman, charting Oswald Cobblepot’s (Colin Farrell) rise to power as a Gotham crime lord.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to open in theaters on October 3, 2025.
