In the 26th century, the planet Madrigal is in open rebellion with the United Nations Space Command. However, the settlers’ days are numbered when the alien Covenant arrives. Soon after, Master Chief and three other Spartans arrive to turn the tide of the battle. Unfortunately, everyone except a teenage girl named Kwan Ha Boo has been killed. Master Chief and the Spartans initially ignore Kwan’s plight. Then the Spartans march back to a cave that Kwan found earlier.

A lone remaining Covenant member hides and witnesses Master Chief pick up an alien artifact. Master Chief somehow activates it, and it shows him distant memories from his childhood. The Covenant alien gets away, and it inadvertently knocks out Kwan. Master Chief takes the injured Kwan into his custody, while his remaining team pursues the Covenant alien’s ship. Sometime later, the alien reports to a human, Makee, who holds a revered place in the Covenant. She is surprised to learn that Master Chief’s ability to activate the artifact mirrors her own.

On the ship, Master Chief is largely indifferent to Kwan, but Miranda Keyes communicates with her via holo. Miranda wants Kwan to record a message to other insurgent planets and tell them that they need to unite with the UNSC. However, Kwan refuses to play ball and demands independence for Madrigal.

Back at the UNSC base, the creator of the Spartan program, Dr. Halsey, reviews footage of Master Chief’s interaction with the artifact. She also apparently really wants to clone herself and create an artificial intelligence. Halsey’s superior, Admiral Parangosky, clearly doesn’t trust her. Then again, Parangosky isn’t exactly trustworthy either. She orders Kwan to be killed. And when Master Chief ignores the order, she has the ship’s oxygen level dropped to knock both of them out.

Master Chief is able to wake up and restore the oxygen, but he can’t stop the ship’s autopilot from its course towards the UNSC base. Kwan is suspicious of Master Chief, but he takes off his helmet and exposes his face to earn her trust. Back on the base, Halsey orders a Spartan team to attack anyone who tries to kill Master Chief, countering Parangosky’s orders.

When the ship lands, it is surrounded by soldiers as the other Spartans prepare to make their move. Master Chief touches the artifact again, and it somehow disables the entire base and allows him to escape with Kwan.
