Netflix’s Daredevil might be dead (for now), but its comic book source material lives on. Contrary to what its title implied, Charles Soule’s final storyline in Marvel’s ongoing series didn’t cause The Death of Daredevil. However, the Man Without Fear didn’t look to be in the best shape at the end of this week’s issue #612. With two months to go until Matt Murdock returns, the series’ new creative team of writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto have teased what’s in store for ol’ hornhead when the book is relaunched in February 2019.
In an interview with Marvel.com, Zdarsky discussed how being put through the wringer once again will affect Matt’s headspace. “Things can’t be business as usual no matter how badly Matt wants them to be,” said Zdarsky. “That was in my head from my first conversations with Charles about the book. The character’s been put through a lot over the years, but I think The Death of Daredevil is going to be a real ‘come to God’ moment for Matt. What does that look like? What will he become? This series is going to be about big questions and finding answers in strange places.” Zdarsky also briefly outlined the process of striking a balance between the title’s familiar darkness and occasional moments of levity. “I’ve always loved the various tonal takes on Daredevil, but for this run I’ve decided to really go deep on the realities of being a vigilante in this world.”

Meanwhile, Checchetto is coming off stints on Old Man Hawkeye and assorted Star Wars titles. Obviously, Daredevil’s New York is a far cry from the rural and cosmic settings of those books. But the artist recognizes the importance in portraying the city in a way that reflects the book’s graphic nature. “New York is the most important character in the series after Matt,” insisted Checchetto. “I think it’s important to show the dark relationship between Daredevil and the city. I hope to do a great job in this sense. Daredevil and Spider-Man are the symbols of New York.“
