After cramming nearly five decades worth of X-Men mythology into a six-issue miniseries, Marvel will try to achieve a similar result with their First Family. Via ComicBook.com, the company has announced plans to launch Fantastic Four: Grand Design this fall.
Last year, Marvel teamed up with writer and artist Ed Piskor to release X-Men: Grand Design. For this abridged take on the FF, the publisher has enlisted Tom Scioli to handle the story and artwork. Scioli’s style has led many critics to compare his work to that of Fantastic Four co-creator Jack Kirby. He may be the ideal choice to trace the team’s history over the last half-century.
“Fantastic Four is like the Magna Carta of Marvel, this founding document, so being allowed to get my hands on it is thrilling,” said Scioli. “They’ve given me a tremendous amount of creative freedom to just go for it.”

Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing will be the focus of the series. However, they certainly won’t be the only superheroes to show up throughout the narrative. After all, the original Fantastic Four comic served as the launching pad for beloved characters like Black Panther, Silver Surfer, and the Inhumans. The magazine also famously revitalized Namor the Sub-Mariner in 1962. All of these characters and more will appear in the new Grand Design miniseries.
Additionally, Marvel has tapped Piskor to contribute a corner box variant cover for the first issue. And even though he isn’t involved with the story, he insists that fans will be pleasantly surprised by Scioli’s efforts.
“Scioli has such unadulterated respect and reverence for the subject matter that I think we can all agree, the Fantastic Four are in great hands with this project!” Piskor said.
Fantastic Four: Grand Design #1 arrives in October. You can check out Scioli’s cover for the first issue and Piskor’s variant below. What other heroes should receive the Grand Design treatment? Tell us what you think in the comment section!
