Comic-Con 2019

San Diego Comic-Con is Currently Still On For July

Given the current state of the world, gathering in large numbers seems like the last thing anyone wants to do right now. The COVID-19 outbreak continues to leave its mark on the entertainment industry, with major events postponed until further notice. However, the organizers behind San Diego Comic-Con aren’t vacating their usual summer weekend until they absolutely have to.

Taking to SDCC’s official Twitter account, Comic-Con International provided guests with an update on the status of this year’s convention. For now, they’re still planning to hold the event in July, but that’s assuming the virus is contained by then. Thankfully, CCI isn’t being careless. They’re staying in touch with public health officials and insist they will make the best decision when the time comes. You can read their full statement below.

The novel coronavirus has already caused the spring convention season to take a few hits. WonderCon Anaheim, Emerald City Comic Con, and ACE Comic Con Northeast are among those that were forced to shut down in the last month. Similarly, film festivals like SXSW, Cannes, and Tribeca were postponed as well.

While CCI’s optimism is certainly endearing, there’s really no way of knowing if the crisis will be over by the summer. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. recently exceeded 200,000, which is more than any other country. Some experts have also said that a vaccine won’t be ready for at least 18 months. However, others suggest that even this is too early of an estimate.

If all goes well, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con will take place from July 23-26.
