Many fans rejoiced when they heard that James Gunn will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again. After a short foray into the DC Extended Universe with the upcoming The Suicide Squad, Gunn will helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. During a recent rewatch of the first installment in the Guardians saga, the director revealed a lot of trivia about that movie. For example, he said that Marvel gave him full creative liberty, and he decided to make that reference to the Celestials.
“The ONLY thing Marvel asked me to include was a Thanos cameo and said maybe I could create an origin for the Infinity Stones,” Gunn said. “Other than that they were up for whatever and weren’t set on any one way to handle the characters.”

Judging from the answers he got, fans really appreciated Gunn’s initiative about the Celestials. He also added that the movie’s Infinity Stone was initially red, and changed to purple only after Marvel belatedly decided that the Aether in Thor: the Dark World was going to be a stone too.

Then Gunn took on the future of one of the most charismatic characters in the whole MCU: Rocket. The director teased that the anthropomorphic raccoon will play a pivotal role in the movies to come.
“I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along,” Gunn added.
At the moment, many details of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are still under wraps and there is no way to be sure what Gunn is referring to. Perhaps fans will get to know more about his origins on the planet Halfworld in the Keystone Quadrant.
