DC Reveals Tim Fox As Future State’s Next Batman

For over a year now, rumors have swirled about DC’s plans for a Black character to take on the mantle of Batman in an upcoming comic event. Now, DC has finally unmasked the character ahead of his heroic debut. Tim Fox, son of longtime Batman ally Lucius Fox, will headline Future State: The Next Batman starting in January.

Tim isn’t exactly a new addition to the DC Universe, having first appeared in Batman #313 in 1979. However, he hasn’t been given much to do over the last four decades. And in recent years, he’s been overshadowed by his brother, Luke, who also helps defend Gotham City as Batwing. Earlier this year, Tim resurfaced in the “Joker War” storyline in DC’s ongoing Batman series. Tim has been estranged from his father for some time. But once the Fox family acquired the Wayne family fortune, Lucius and Tim reconnected.

Of course, Tim won’t be the only new hero making his grand entrance when Future State rolls around. The event hits pause on all current DC titles and imagines a future where a number of the universe’s heavy-hitters have been succeeded by a new generation of do-gooders. The Next Batman comes from Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and artist Nick Derington. In February, Ridley will also team up with artist Oliver Coipel for  Batman: Black and White, which gives Tim a female sidekick.

Future State: The Next Batman #1 hits stores on January 5.
