Dynamite Adds Simone, Johnson, Walker to Red Sonja: Black, White, Red

Last month, Dynamite shared the first details for Red Sonja: Black, White, Red, a new anthology series presented in a simple three-color palette. Each of the book’s four issues will feature three distinct tales starring Hyrkania’s savior. Now, Dynamite has announced several additional creative teams for the upcoming issues.

Dynamite previously announced that Black, White, Red’s debut issue will lead off with a story by Kurt Busiek and Benjamin Dewey. Other stories in that issue will come courtesy of Amanda Deibert and Cat Staggs as well as Mark Russell and Bob Q. However, Dynamite has recruited a big-name Sonja vet for one of the series’ next installments. Gail Simone is teaming with artist Walter Geovani on a tale that spans “the entirety of Sonja’s life” and gives us “a coda to her take on the character.”

Black, White, Red marks Simone’s first major brush with the Hyborean age since concluding her acclaimed Red Sonja run in 2015. Her storytelling approach also paved the way for her to consult on Millennium’s upcoming movie starring Hannah John-Kamen as Sonja.

Meanwhile, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Steve Beach will explore Sonja’s final days in a story of their own. In their vision of Sonja’s future, the heroine is now a white-haired queen. But luckily, this hasn’t slowed her readiness for battle. Writer-artist Jonboy Meyers will also tackle a similar premise in a separate adventure. His story features an aging Sonja battling a “long-forgotten foe” whose actions are potentially world-ending.

Yet another tale from David F. Walker and Will Robson finds Sonja clashing with a mythical bloodthirsty creature. Plus, we’ll get to see her tangle with a “massive sentient fungus bog” in a story by Jeff Parker and Natalie Nourigat, and the fun doesn’t stop there. Other Black, White, Red contributors include Jonathan Lau, Soo Lee, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Dearbhla Kelly.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red launches in July, with the second issue hitting comic shops sometime in August. You can view several covers for the upcoming issues in the gallery below.
