Kamala Khan Returns in a New Ms. Marvel Miniseries Later This Year

Just in time for the premiere of her new series on Disney+, Kamala Khan is on her way back to Marvel’s comic book universe. The House of Ideas has announced that the groundbreaking superhero will headline a brand new miniseries later this year.

Ms. Marvel: Beyond the Limit finds Kamala visiting her cousin’s laboratory in Chicago, when a mysterious explosion triggers some kind of interdimensional calamity, which might explain the alternate Kamalas that grace the first issue’s cover. Whatever happens also leaves Kamala’s powers “on the fritz” and puts her in a race against time to set things right.

Beyond the Limit marks Kamala’s first solo series in more than two years. Additionally, it serves as the comic writing debut of Samira Ahmed, who is best known for young adult novels like Internment and Love, Hate, & Other Filters. Ahmed will be joined by Runaways artist Andrés Genolet. It’s also noteworthy that Ahmed is the first female South Asian writer to pen her own Ms. Marvel series. And since much of Ahmed’s writing has tackled the Muslim experience in America, she couldn’t have picked a more appropriate character to explore.

“For kids of color, Muslim kids, there was literally zero representation when I was growing up,” Ahmed recently told Entertainment Weekly. “Just the fact that Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman was brunette and from someplace outside America was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing!’ So when Sana and Willow announced Ms. Marvel, I was just so stunned. My heart soars for all the kids who will have Ms. Marvel comics as part of their childhood. For me, what’s cool about her is that she’s a girl like all the other girls. She’s balancing all this stuff: Parental expectations – which I can 100 percent relate to now even in adulthood – plus school, crushes, and then this extraordinary side job. I feel so much that that is teen life, where you’re struggling to balance all those things and find your voice and where you fit in.”

Ms. Marvel: Beyond the Limit #1 hits comic shops on September 15. You can view Mashal Ahmed’s cover for the first issue below.
