Earlier this month, Netflix axed Jupiter’s Legacy after a single season. Regardless, this isn’t stopping Mark Millar from churning out the streaming service’s next potential hit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Millar is making a foray into long-form graphic novel storytelling with King of Spies.
Millar previously created the Kingsman franchise with artist Dave Gibbons in 2012. But this new story sounds like it’s taking on a much different flavor. According to the book’s official logline, King of Spies centers on Sir Roland King, the “greatest secret agent” in Britain’s history. Now retired, Roland discovers he only has six months to live after he’s diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Unwilling to ignore the “greed and corruption” that continues to fester throughout the world, he decides to go out with a bang, using his unmatched skill set to target “the REAL monsters” that he was forbidden to touch during his heyday as the U.K.’s top spy. Along the way, he will also fix some of the mistakes he made in his personal life.
“The spy world was very good to us with Kingsman and a return to the genre had to be something special,” said Millar in a new statement. “This is that project. I love stories about an old gun-fighter back for one last job and this is the granddaddy of them all. It’s so incredibly violent and emotional, but really fun too.”

Although Image is publishing King of Spies as a graphic novel, Millar and Netflix already have plans for its adaptation as a TV series or a movie. Netflix also declined to reveal the identity of the “superstar artist” who will be collaborating with Millar on the book. Instead, Netflix shared early teaser images (pictured above) illustrated by Ozgur Yildirim and former DC art director Mark Chiarello.
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for King of Spies.
