Fright Night Gets a Comic Book Sequel From Director Tom Holland

Nearly 40 years after Fright Night hit theaters, Tom Holland (the director, not the actor) is revisiting the film’s characters in a new comic book. Starting this fall, American Mythology Productions will publish a new series that serves as a direct sequel to Holland’s 1985 cult classic.

The original Fright Night centered on Charley Brewster, a teenage horror fan who discovers that his next-door neighbor is a real-life vampire. Eventually, Charley teams up with his idol, legendary horror movie actor Peter Vincent, to end his neighbor’s rampage.

Although a sequel to the film premiered in 1988, Holland did not return to direct it. But a few years ago, Holland confirmed that he was writing a follow-up installment called Fright Night 2: Resurrection. The filmmaker initially claimed that he was writing the sequel as a novel, but it’s clear that he’s shifted course since then.

Now titled Fright Night: Dead by Dawn, the sequel (via GamesRadar) picks up a year after the events of the film. All of the surviving characters will be back, including Charley, Peter, and Charley’s girlfriend, Amy. However, Holland isn’t writing the story himself. Instead, that honor falls to James Kuhoric, who will collaborate with artist Cyrus Mesarcia.

This technically isn’t the first time that the world of Fright Night has found its way into comic books. Beginning in 1988, NOW Comics published its own Fright Night series until the company for bankruptcy in the early ’90s.

Fright Night: Dead by Dawn #1 hits comic shops on November 24. You can check out the main cover for the first issue below.
