A new creative team joined The Amazing Spider-Man back in October. But with Spidey’s 60th anniversary fast approaching, what better time to reset with a brand new issue #1? And who better to ring in the character’s latest milestone than one of his definitive artists? In just a few months, the House of Ideas will relaunch its flagship title with the new creative team of writer Zeb Wells and artist John Romita Jr.
Technically, this isn’t Wells’ first pass at The Amazing Spider-Man. He first wrote the book over a decade ago and recently served on the series’ Beyond Board, which is where he trading off writing duties with several other scribes over the last two months. But now that the “Beyond” era is nearing its end, Wells is flying solo. And he couldn’t have picked a better collaborator than Romita Jr., whose run on the book with J. Michael Straczynski still holds up as one of the best creative pairings in modern comics history.
“I’ve waited my entire career to work with John Romita Jr.,” said Wells. “To team up with him on Amazing Spider-Man for the character’s 60th anniversary is so exciting words can’t describe it. We’re gonna have a blast!”

Wells and Romita Jr.’s run will pick up in the aftermath of a “terrible and mysterious incident” that leaves Peter estranged from his closest allies and family members. That includes the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and even Aunt May. And it doesn’t help that he has to face new threats from both Doctor Octopus and Tombstone.
“To take being lucky to another level: Marvel has allowed me to get back to work on this amazing character, and work with another brilliant writer, Zeb Wells!” said Romita Jr. “The stories are stunning and I am reading the scripts with a grin and wonderment…..then wondering how the heck to do them justice!!”
“One commonality here, is how lucky I am to be back working on my ‘other’ brother, Spider-Man, and to be back with my professional ‘family,’ Marvel,” added Romita Jr. “Thanks folks, I’ll work hard to make you proud!”
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 hits comic shops on April 6. You can view Romita Jr.’s cover for the upcoming issue below.
