Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez Take Over DC’s Batman Comic In July

Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez Take Over DC’s Batman Comic

It’s been only two months since writer Joshua Williamson took over for James Tynion IV as the writer behind DC’s flagship Batman series alongside artist Jorge Molina. But it looks as though Williamson’s run on the book is going to be short-lived. Starting this summer, a new creative team is stepping in to handle Bruce Wayne’s comic book exploits. Via ComicBook.com, DC announced that Chip Zdarsky and and Jorge Jimenez are taking over the book.

Zdarsky and Jimenez will launch their Batman run with the series’ upcoming 125th issue. Their initial six-issue arc, dubbed “Failsafe,” finds Bruce suffering from nightmares of a horrific future. Bruce must also deal with a “startling enemy” from his past who wants to end Batman once and for all. But luckily, Bruce is getting some extra help from Tim Drake/Robin as he navigates his latest dilemma.

“When DC approached me to write Batman, I immediately thought about things that could really challenge the character mentally, physically, and in terms of his relationships,” teased Zdarsky. “Failsafe is his Doomsday. When I started mapping out the story I got really excited about where it could take the title.”

Right now, Zdarsky is also writing DC’s Batman: The Knight limited series. And although Zdarsky is already an established artist in his own right, he had nothing but good things to say about working with Jimenez.

“He’s a superstar!” said Zdarsky. “Not just as an artist, but as a person! He’s really delightful and excited about the character and the direction we’re going in, which is great. We talked about going darker with the book and he’s been all aboard, with some really stunning pages that showcase the tone. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Jorge. He creates beauty at an amazing speed. I’m angry that he’s also so handsome as it’s just not fair. The only good thing about the pandemic is that I probably won’t have to be on a panel next to him which would only serve to highlight how old and gross I look.”

Batman #125 will hit comic shops on July 5. You can view artwork from the issue in the gallery below.
