Amy Jo Johnson’s Power Rangers Comic Tells Dark Tale of Alternate Reality

Amy Jo Johnson‘s upcoming Power Rangers comic may not be as kid-friendly as expected. The story, titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return, will be set in an dark version of Angel Grove outside the canon timeline.

The story details were revealed as part of BOOM! Studios’ Kickstarter drive for MMPR: The Return. While the four-issue series is already complete, BOOM! Studios elected to offer Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans a chance to buy the book through BOOM! Direct Reserve. These special editions will only be available through the Kickstarter drive. The trailer for the campaign, which can be viewed below, previews some of the comic art and benefits for contributing.

MMPR: The Return is a ‘bold new vision’

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return is written by Johnson and Matt Hotson and illustrated by Nico Leon. The comic is set in an alternate timeline “in which the team finally defeated Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd.” Their victory was a Pyrrhic one, however, and the Rangers are said to have lost everything. The story opens 22 years after the Rangers broke up, as the retired heroes gather to mourn their mutual losses.

This leads to the revelation that Jason, the Red Ranger, has been operating as a lone vigilante and disappeared mysteriously. A search is launched, as a mysterious figure follows the former Rangers in their quest. The story which follows will rewrite the present and future of the Power Rangers.

The Kickstarter drive has already met its goal, but fans still have until December 11 to secure a special edition copy of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return. The basic book is available in paperback and hardcover editions, with a cover by David Mack. Fans can also purchase variant covers of the monthly MMPR: The Return comics, a special slipcase edition with six Goñi Montes prints, and a variety of CGC graded Power Rangers comics.
