Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers Adds New Artist for Next Story Arc

Artist Jorge Corona will join writer Daniel Warren Johnson for the second story arc of Skybound Entertainment‘s ongoing Transformers series.

Johnson currently serves as both the writer and artist of Transformers (the centerpiece of Skybound and Image Comics‘ Energon Universe). Today, Skybound and Hasbro announced that starting with April’s issue #7, Corona will take over art duties, while Johnson will continue to write the series. Skybound has also revealed Corona’s variant cover for Transformers #7, featuring Optimus Prime flanked by his fellow Autobots. The issue also features a main cover by Johnson alongside series colorist Mike Spicer, as well as additional variants by Karen S. Darboe, Caspar Wjingaard, Taurin Clarke, and Mike Del Mundo.

“Following what promises to be an epic end to the first story arc with the upcoming TRANSFORMERS #5 and #6, Jorge Corona joins to begin the Energon Universe story that will have everyone talking,” Skybound teases.

Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona on the future of Transformers

“It’s a rare breed of artist that can naturally bring an organic quality to things that are inherently mechanical, and Jorge is one of those chosen few,” Johnson said. “Prepare your eyes for a feast of brawn and beauty, my friends. This man draws a mean looking Soundwave. KA BAM!”

“It started with a ‘Do you want to work on a book with Daniel Warren Johnson?’ and just in case that wasn’t a deafening ‘YES,’ they added: ‘It’s for the TRANSFORMERS book’ … Growing up with TRANSFORMERS and its many iterations expanded in many ways what a cartoon could do for me. Even though it had the classic good vs. evil premise, it also added malleability to what the characters could do in that world,” Corona added.

“Betrayals, regrets, self-doubts, were all emotions that drove these characters and it added a complexity that I wasn’t familiar with in other shows,” the artist continued. “Fast forward to 30 years later and here I am seeing Daniel’s take on the franchise, rooted in his love for the original Generation One version, and it’s like reliving those childhood memories multiplied by a thousand. I am very honored and humbled to be a part of this project and cannot wait to share all of the craziness that’s coming up in the book.”

Transformers #7 goes on sale Wednesday, April 10 from Image Comics.
