Growing up is hard enough without factoring superpowers into the mix. It’s a fact Wally West is all too aware of as The Flash, a former sidekick, and father to two teen superheroes. Still, Wally has tried to be supportive, even as Irey “Thunderheart” West, found new ways to use the Speed Force. Now, a preview for The Flash #5 reveals that Wally’s son, Jai “Surge” West, is also developing new powers.
The Flash #5 by Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato Jr. finds Jai in a pained state. Beyond having little control over his abilities, Surge feels like an outsider in his own family. This is due to his connection to the Speed Force manifesting as enhanced strength rather than superspeed. He also has a teleportation power, which only seems to be good for taking him to his father when Surge is afraid. However, there turns out to be more to Jai’s powers than meets the eye.
Check out the first-look preview of The Flash #5 below:
The Flash’s Son, Surge, Can Manipulate Matter
After jumping to his father and then back to his school, Jai thinks he somehow learned how to teleport. He is corrected by an unseen figure, who explains Jai is entangling conduits and collapsing the quantum waveform between them. In simpler terms, Jai is manipulating the unseen connection between related objects, like himself and The Flash.
Quantum entanglement is the phenomena where two matched particles, like electrons, remain connected despite the distance between them. The changes to one particle are reflected in the other, for reasons science cannot fully explain yet. This violates several basic rules of elementary physics, which are currently being reassessed by actual scientists.
What this means for The Flash and his son is anybody’s guess. However, it may explain why Surge’s powers are so different from the rest of his family. It may also indicate that he’s potentially more powerful than his father. While Wally West routinely violates the laws of physics, Jai West might be able to rewrite them completely if he can master his powers.
The Flash #5 arrives in comic shops everywhere on January 23, 2024.
