The pulp hero Doctor Omega is largely unknown outside of his native France. Created by science fiction author Arnould Calopin in 1903, the good Doctor is a mysterious inventor, who travels in time and space. (The similarity to Doctor Who has been noted, but no proof of inspiration or plagiarism has ever been proven.) However, the elder Doctor’s profile may be raised by a new comic book on Kickstarter.
Monstrous Books is publishing a five-issue miniseries, based around the new adventures of Doctor Omega. Titled The Omega Eleven – The Merlin Job, the series finds the Doctor assembling a team of famous thieves for a time heist. The team includes his youthful companion Jack Dawkins, aka The Artful Dodger. Their target is the court of Camelot, where they plan to steal the Philosopher’s Stone from Merlin himself.
The scripts for the series are written by Bram Stoker Award winner James Aquilone. The interior artwork is provided by Zac Atkinson. He is best known for his work on series such as Young Justice, Teen Titans, and Transformers.
“Zac’s artwork for the project has blown me away,” notes James Aquilone. “You can see the love and care in every stroke of his pen.” Zack Atkinson was equally complementary of Aquilone, describing the Doctor Omega comic concept as “Doctor Who turned up to Ocean’s 11.”
Doctor Omega Variant Covers Revealed
Apart from the main cover by Zack Atkinson, the series will feature a number of variant covers. Two of these covers were produced by Atkinson, in the art styles of Rick and Morty, and Calvin and Hobbes. The other covers were created by Elvira: Mistress of the Dark artist Dave Acosta and Fallen Angel artist J.K. Woodward.
The Omega Eleven #1 Kickstarter runs through March 7, 2024.
