Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have shared a first look inside the upcoming third issue of the Energon Universe limited series Cobra Commander.
Cobra Commander #3 arrives in one month from writer Joshua Williamson, artist Andrea Milana, and colorist Annalisa Leoni. The issue features a main cover by Milana and Leoni — as well as variant covers by Paul Azaceta, Chris Burnham with Brian Reber, Priscilla Petraites with Frank Martin, and Karl Kerschl. At this time, Skybound has also shared three unlettered preview pages, in which the Cobra Commander finds himself in a precarious position while Zarana shows off an Energon cube to her fellow Dreadnoks.

Skybound explains that Cobra Commander #3 will determine whether the eponymous G.I. Joe villain and the Dreadnoks will be able to coexist within the Energon Universe. The issue’s official synopsis reads as follows: “Cobra Commander isn’t the only one looking to harness the alien energy source known as Energon. That means he has to either take control of the new organization he’s encountered … or destroy them.”
The Energon Universe redefines the G.I. Joe mythos
Cobra Commander is the second of four limited series that will introduce G.I. Joe characters to Skybound and Image‘s Energon Universe — which also includes fellow Hasbro property Transformers and the Skybound-original Void Rivals. The series is currently running alongside Duke — also written by Williamson. Skybound promises that these limited series will “set the stage for a fresh new take on G.I. JOE, Cobra and the iconic characters that you only think you know.”
Meanwhile, writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson is currently five issues into his run on Skybound’s ongoing Transformers series. Elsewhere in the Energon Universe, Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici’s Void Rivals is due to return for issue #7 next month after going on hiatus back in November.
Cobra Commander #3 goes on sale Wednesday, March 20 from Image Comics.
