Jonny Quest is one of the most notable and well-loved animated shows in American history. Despite only running for a single season in prime time on ABC, it was rerun continually for decades. Now, Dynamite Entertainment is reviving the classic action-adventure series with a new monthly comic that will premiere on Free Comic Book Day.
First released in 1964, Jonny Quest was the first dramatic cartoon produced by Hanna-Barbera. The action centered around the titular boy adventurer, who kept finding trouble, traveling the world with his scientist father and adoptive brother. They were also accompanied by bodyguard Race Bannon and a dog called Bandit.
Jonny Quest was famed for its distinctive art style, which more closely resembled comics like Terry and the Pirates than Hanna-Barbera’s usual funny animal shows. New episodes were produced in 1986 as part of a syndication deal some 20 years after the original series ended. It also spawned a sequel series, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, which introduced Race’s daughter, Jessie.
The new Jonny Quest comic is being produced as part of Dynamite’s partnership with Warner Bros. The publisher has already seen success with their comic book revival of the Thundercats animated series. Plans are also already in the works for a revival of the Hanna-Barbera superhero Space Ghost.
