New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell is one of the hottest novelists in the world. She is also a comic writer, with two Eisner Award nominations to date. Now, Rowell is making the jump to DC Comics, penning a Lois Lane story this summer.
Comics are near and dear to the writer’s heart. She has been a comic reader since junior high, which had a hand in inspiring her YA novel Fangirl. She is also a journalist, which will inform her upcoming premiere in Action Comics.
“As a former newspaper reporter, I’ve always had a soft spot for Daily Planet stories,” Rowell shared. “I love that Clark Kent is Superman and also a working journalist — and that it isn’t just dusty backstory. It’s a real facet of his character.” Rowell is also a fan of the relationship between Lois and Clark, noting that such workplace romances are fairly common among real journalists.
“I really like it when comic book romances last,” Rowell states. “There’s a lot of story to tell after two people say yes to each other. So — even though I was a little nervous about diving into the DC Universe — I couldn’t resist the chance to write a love story that is also a newsroom story, and still a superhero story.”
Cian Tormey to Provide Art for Rainbow Rowell Story
Rainbow Rowell has partnered with Irish illustrator Cian Tormey. Superman fans will recognize Tormey’s work from the recent Superman: Son of Kal-El series centered around Lois and Clark’s son, Jonathan. Tormey was as excited about the upcoming story as Rowell and quick to praise his collaborator as he revealed the base story.
“The story that Rainbow and I are telling is about Lois finding her strength, with Clark supporting her as she becomes stronger in her convictions,” Tormey explained. “He sees her finding her courage in a new role, her sense of responsibility for everyone—a gentle reminder for Clark of how far he has come, and how far all of us who are not blessed with superpowers can go when faced with adversity.”
Action Comics #1067 releases on July 10, 2024.
