The Witcher: Corvo Bianco #1 Preview Premieres First American Work by Italian Comics Legend

Many impressive artists have worked on The Witcher in multiple mediums. The latest book from Dark Horse Comics, Corvo Bianco, marks the American comics debut of Italian artist Corrado Mastantuono. While a legend in his native country, Mastantuono’s work is largely unknown to American audiences. However, his dark, detailed aesthetic is a perfect fit for the world of The Witcher.

Born in Rome, Corrado Mastanuono earned a degree at the prestigious Istituto Nazionale per la Cinematografica e la Televiona. Working as an animator until 1989, he broke into comics that same year. Mastanuono first worked for the Italian branch of Disney, which has published its own unique Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck comics for years. He also joined Bonelli Publishers, where he started out illustrating the series Nick Raider. Mastanuono also produced the covers for Nick Raider before becoming a staff artist on the Magico Vento series in 1998. His background in action comics makes him an ideal contributor to The Witcher graphic novels.

The Witcher: Corvo Bianco’s Story Explained

Written by Bartosz Sztybor, Corvo Bianco finds Geralt of Rivia awaiting a rendezvous with his beloved Yennefer. at a vineyard run by a friend. It is unclear from the preview just when in the series’ timeline Corvo Bianco takes place. It is clear, however, that it is during one of the “on-again” periods of Geralt and Yennefer’s on-again/off-again romance.

Taking a break from monster slaying, the Witcher is happily employed as a grape stomper. Alas, this vacation is soon cut short by less pleasant company requiring Geralt’s unique talents. This, in turn, leads to a dark secret that, unlike a fine wine, has only grown fouler with age.

The Witcher: Corvo Bianco #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on May 8, 2024.
