The shield of Captain America is one of the most famous weapons in all of comics. Forged from a unique alloy of Wakandan Vibranium and Proto-Adamantium, it is nigh-indestructible. However, there have been occasions where the Sentinel of Liberty made use of other shields. Such an occasion arises in The Avengers #14, by Jed MacKay and Carlos Fabian Villa.
The Avengers #14 ties into the Blood Hunt event. However, the current core roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is absent, having been waylaid during Blood Hunt #1. This leads Captain America Steve Rogers to assemble a team of reserve Avengers to battle the vampire army rampaging through Manhattan.
The ad hoc Avengers team are an odd bunch, comprised of Steve Rogers, Hercules, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Hazmat. Most of them had never worked together. Nevertheless, they were all Avengers from one team or another. They were also willing to follow Steve Rogers to Hell and back against the undead hordes.
Captain America Has a Silver-Edged Shield
In the heat of battle, Captain America revealed he was using a variant shield, edged in silver. This made its touch lethal to vampires. Steve Rogers explained that he had this special shield made after he was briefly turned into a werewolf.
Logically, it makes sense that Captain America might have backup weapons beyond his classic shield. While its unique mixture is good for most situations, Steve Rogers is a soldier, first and foremost. As such, it stands to reason that he might have special shields to use when his normal weapon is ineffective. The most notable example of this was an energy shield, given to him by Sharon Carter, which could be reshaped into different forms. However, despite this versatility, Steve Rogers has stuck by his main shield for most of his career.
Avengers #14 is now available in comic shops everywhere.
