Mystique Returns in X-Men From The Ashes Solo Series

Raven Darkholme has been many things over her long life. Spy. Assassin. Terrorist. Yet the fall of Krakoa saw the shapeshifter known as Mystique dedicate herself to two new roles; wife and mother. However, to save the life she’s built for herself, Raven must return to the dark underbelly of the Marvel Universe. She will do this in a new solo miniseries, as part of the X-Men From the Ashes revival.

The new Mystique series is the brainchild of writer/artist Declan Shalvey. They are best known to Marvel Comics readers for their work on Moon Knight and Dead Man Logan. They are also well known for their writing and covers for the recent ThunderCats revival published by Dynamite Entertainment.

“Mystique is hands down one of the most compelling characters to come from the Marvel Universe,” Shalvey shared. “To have an opportunity to put my own stamp on such an iconic character and showcase her in a series of her own is a unique privilege. As a rabid X-fan since childhood, I’m having a blast channeling all my X-enthusiasm into writing and drawing this project.”

The story behind Mystique #1

Recently, Mystique reunited with her wife, Destiny, and reforged new relationships with their children, Rogue and Nightcrawler. However, the enemies of Krakoa are at work, planning a killing blow against the scattered and disorganized X-Men. Armed with a list of targets as long as her criminal record, Raven must remind the world why it hates and fears her,

This setup for the new From the Ashes series seems similar to the 2003 Mystique series written by Brian K. Vaughan. The new series is also a spy thriller, which will drag Raven Darkholme back into action as a covert operative. This, in turn, will pit her against her old adversary, Nick Fury.

Mystique #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on October 16, 2024.
