X-Men’s Firestar Joins the West Coast Avengers in Fiery New Cover Art

Originally created for the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends cartoon, Firestar has remained popular since jumping to comics in 1985. Since her premiere, she has been a member of both the X-Men and the Avengers. Now, a hot cover from Adam Hughes heralds her membership in the newest incarnation of the West Coast Avengers.

Firestar was forever redefined in the pages of X-Men during the Krakoa age. Angelica Jones was a double agent, seemingly working with the anti-Mutant group Orchis, while gathering intel for the Mutant resistance. However, the bad blood some still hold against her leaves Angelica Jones looking for a fresh start. This leads her to go west, joining Tony Stark and his new team in California. It also leads her to don a new costume, which is well-displayed by Hughes’ variant cover.

Redemption common theme of West Coast Avengers

Firestar is not the only hero who joins Iron Man in seeking a new beginning. The new team will also feature War Machine and the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman. The team’s oddest addition, however, is the android Ultron. Once one of Marvel’s greatest villains, Ultron seeks to make amends for his past as the latest recruit to the West Coast Avengers.

“Redemption has been on my mind this year, and we’ll see who can be redeemed on the West Coast,” teased writer Gerry Duggan. “It’s a fun action story, but it’s also an Ultron tale – and one of my biggest Marvel swings yet. I previously had the pleasure of writing a pretty great horror story about Ultron wearing Pym’s face, and this is a very different tale with one of my favorite Marvel characters, in one of my favorite legacy titles in the city that has been my home for so long.” Duggan also praised artist Danny Kim, promising readers will love what Kim is “cooking up.”

West Coast Avengers #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on November 27, 2024.
