Note From the Editor: As you may have noticed, Superhero Hype’s special cosplay correspondent, Ashlynne Dae, is a big fan of the X-Men. And there’s no mutant she loves becoming more than Jean Grey, one of the original members of the team. In this week’s cosplay column, Ashlynne is sharing pictures from three different Jean Grey cosplays, as well one with Jean’s clone, Madelyne Pryor, as the Goblin Queen.
Today I’m spotlighting one of my favorite characters of all time, and definitely my favorite mutant, Jean Grey!
There are tons of other versions of Jean that I still have on my list to do. So hopefully with some time, I’ll have another Jean spotlight to make in the future!

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Shades of Jean Grey
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Shades of Jean Grey #1
I’ve made many of Jean's main costumes, and plan to make or remake even more!
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Shades of Jean Grey #2
Years ago, I made Jean's classic Marvel Girl outfit as well. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of that outfit.
I definitely need to get better at getting photos for all of my costumes!

I commissioned the very talented suit designer heading Arachnid Studios to design Jean's classic blue and yellow from the '90s; which he then made available for sale so others could wear it.
But I have plans to remake this costume myself as well!
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Shades of Jean Grey #4
I’ve been exploring Jean's personas almost since I started cosplaying. My original Phoenix costume was the 4th cosplay I ever made, along with my original Black Queen; which was the 5th!

I made her Phoenix outfit and Dark Phoenix, and I’ve since remade Phoenix. Now, I’m working on remaking Dark Phoenix in the same style!

I think Jean is compelling because of her struggle with overcoming her powers and her past, as well as her deep empathy for others.
Jean also has a passionate nature, and she gives her all to the causes she believes in. She has always tried to do right by her team and her friends.

Regardless of how many times she dies, Jean always come back and finds a way to go forward, even if pieces of her are left behind in the process.
Jean is strong and deeply flawed, but at her core, she is good. I think that has always resonated with me.

Regardless, Jean is not incorruptible, as seen here.
Jean's Black Queen incarnation came from the Hellfire Club arc in The Dark Phoenix Saga .

Technically, Madelyne Pryor AKA the Goblin Queen is an evil clone of Jean. But I’m going to say that she still counts as Jean, haha!
Superhero Hype Cosplay: Shades of Jean Grey #10
I have devoted a lot of my time as a cosplayer to Jean Grey (or even Maddie), because there are some characters you just keep coming back to again and again. She is just one of those characters I always gravitate towards.
And I can definitely never get enough of her.
