Superhero Hype’s Best Amazon Movie and DVD Deals for May 13

Movie theaters may be opening again, but not everyone’s ready to go back. And if the kids are stuck at home, purchases, rather than rentals, start to look better and better for the inevitable repeat viewings. But with so many, it’s hard to know where to begin or what to afford. In this ongoing series, Superhero Hype takes a look at some of the better deals Amazon.com has running as of publication time. Please note that all deals are subject to change or sell out at any time based on supply and demand. These are the deals for May 13.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1-3 Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

$197.69

Get 23 movies for less than $200 in this region-free import set of the entire MCU between Avengers and Avengers: Endgame. Tony Stark would approve.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital)

$29.99

Oompa, loompa, doompa door day, Wonka’s factory looks great in 4K! Get a better look at the world of pure imagination than ever before. So convincingly close to real life that the snozzberries will practically taste like snozzberries.

Star Trek Discovery Season 3 (Blu-ray)

$43.49

Finally, Star Trek gets out of the prequel era and moves the timeline forward! Michael, Saru, Stamets and the rest find themselves in the 30th century after a disaster called the Burn. Can they put Starfleet back together again? And why’s Vulcan now called Ni’var?

Big Fish [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital]

$21.99

In one of Tim Burton’s more understated and underrated films, Albert Finney plays a dying dad whose memories sound a lot more like tall tales. But his apparent lies may have more truth to them than anyone realizes.

Shrek 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital 20th Anniversary Edition – 4K UHD

$22.99

Some BODY once told us, this movie’s gonna rule us. We ain’t the sharpest tools in the shed, but anyone can see that despite the franchise it became, the original Shrek came across as a refreshing satire of Disney fairy tales, and a body-positive one at that. The sequels may not hold up as well, but there were good reasons that first film hit the spot.

Venom [Blu-ray] 4K + Blu-ray + Digital

$19.07

Before Carnage gets unleashed, catch up on the original Tom Hardy Venom. It’s like Sony wanted to make a ’90s style antihero movie, but nobody told Tom Hardy, who showed up doing a Marlon Brando impersonation, semi-romancing his own sentient dark side. Adding physical comedy to body horror, and vocining both Venom and Eddie Brock, Hardy becomes a one-man odd couple. It may not be the comics, but it’s a compelling watch.

300 (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital)

$17.99

This is the one. The movie that made Zack Snyder the darling of gridark comic book fans. Translating Frank Miller’ visuals almost exactly, Snyder turned this live-action motion comic into a testosterone soaked fantasy and made Gerard Butler an action star. Then he got Watchmen, and a rabid legion of supporters. It’s best to ignore the actual history involved, and see 300 as the propaganda.hype story it is framed as within the narrative. THESS…EZ…SPARTAAAAA!

Planet of the Apes 1-3 Trilogy [4K Ultra HD + Blu-Ray + Digital]

$28.93

Caesar is home, in this trilogy that’s either a prequel to the classic franchise or a complete reboot. Either way, Andy Serkis shines in this tale of chimps inheriting the Earth when man proves unable to coexist nicely. That deadly plague destroying civilization isn’t helping matters, either. Think The Ten Commandments, but we’re the Egyptians, and Caesar is ape-Moses.

Terminator 6-Film Collection (BD) [Blu-ray]

$31.95

Even if you only like three of them, this is a good deal. And even the misfires — save one — still feature Arnold Schwarzenegger being a big, quipping cyborg who smashes through walls.

10 Cloverfield Lane (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital)

$9.96

Mary-Elizabeth Winstead wakes up in the underground bunker of survivalist John Goodman after a car wreck, and is told the apocalypse happened. Can she believe him? Should she try to escape? And is the danger inside worse than whatever’s out there? The best of the Cloverfield movies, this one depends more on performances than gimmicks, but the ending does not skimp.
