Supergirl Origins and Evolutions

Before the CBS series debuts, explore decades of DC Comics history with Supergirl Origins and Evolutions!

Tonight, CBS is debuting their new small-screen take on DC Comics’ Supergirl and, in celebration of that fact, we’re taking a look back at the various Supergirl origins, examining the many iterations of the character that have appeared over the decades. Check it all out below in the Supergirl Origins and Evolutions slideshow!

The real world Supergirl origins lie in 1959. Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, Supergirl debuted in 1958’s Superman #123. She quickly proved to be popular with the comic book fans. Supergirl wasn’t the first teenage girl version of a popular established male hero, but she’s proven that she has staying power. Even Supergirl’s death in 1985 couldn’t hold her down forever as the character has come back a number of times. Explore all the Supergirl origins below!

Prior to the current comic book movie onslaught, Supergirl was the first established American superheroine to headline her own film back in 1984. And yet it wasn’t until 1998 that Supergirl made her first appearance in animation as a supporting cast member of the Superman: The Animated Series. Supergirl’s alter ego, Kara Zor-El, also had a large role on the seventh season of Smallville.

The “Supergirl” TV series could be a turning point for both the character and the franchise. Even 56 years after her comic book debut, Supergirl is still overshadowed by her famous cousin. A successful television show would go a long way towards carving out a unique legacy for the Girl of Steel, but that all depends upon how fans react to the show. There are no guarantees, even for Supergirl.

Ahead of Supergirl’s series premiere, SuperHeroHype’s Supergirl Orgins and Evolutions is taking a broad overview of Supergirl’s career in comics and in other media. We’ve included her defining role in Crisis on Infinite Earths, the core Supergirl titles, and the wildly different incarnations of Supergirl from the comics.
