Post-Apocalyptic Treasure Hunting in Afterburn

In the near future, a massive solar flare strikes the dayside of the Earth, utterly destroying the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, Asia, India and Russia are turned into wastelands. What life remains becomes mutated from radiation and fallout. This is the backdrop for Red 5 Comics’ upcoming adventure series, “Afterburn.”

Beneath the ash, death and tragedy, treasures both modern and ancient lay unclaimed. Enter Jake and his team of “recovery experts”. For the right price, they are willing to enter the quarantine zone to retrieve items for rich Western clients. The Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone, the Crown Jewels — no job is too big or small. Along the way, they must face rival treasure hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs, and hostile mutants. But as the saying goes — amid chaos, there’s profit.

“Afterburn’ is written by Red 5 Comics co-founders, Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens. Chitwood was a co-founder of TheForce.net and currently writes for ComingSoon.net and Superhero Hype!. Ens is former Director of Lucas Online for Lucasfilm, and the creator of such comic series as “Star Wars: Evasive Action” and “Neozoic.”

“I’ve found the best way to describe the series is ‘Indiana Jones meets Mad Max'”, says Chitwood. “But instead of ancient artifacts in cob-webbed temples in traditional pulp adventure, we open up the first issue with Jake stealing the Mona Lisa from the ruins of the Louvre. That pretty much set the tone for the whole series.”

The “Afterburn” creative team includes penciller Wayne Nichols (“Lady Supreme: Supreme Sacrific,” “BPRD – Dark Waters”), inked by Nick Schley (“Abiding Perdition,” “10th Musce,” “Abyss”), lettered by Harvey Award-nominated Troy Peteri (“Necromancer,” “Witchblade”) with colors by Marc Hampson and Art Lyon (“JLA,” “Authority,” “Transformers”). Covers are stunningly painted by “Rock Star of Illustration” Matt Busch (“You Can Draw Star Wars,” “Battlestar Galactica: Resurrection”).

“Afterburn” is a four-issue bimonthly series, with the first issue hitting stands in January 2008. However, as Red 5 Comics is still a new publisher, fans should contact their local comic shop in November 2007 and pre-order Diamond PREVIEWS code NOV073786 to ensure their copy.

Red 5 Comics debuted on-shelf last month, with the sell-out of launch title “Atomic Robo #1” (second printing on its way) and strong sales and re-orders for follow-ups “Abyss #1” and “Neozoic #1.”

Red 5 Comics creates and produces cinematic-style comic book entertainment, debuting its first titles in October 2007. It was founded by Paul Ens, former Director of Lucasfilm’s Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of TheForce.net. Red 5 is presented by ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype.com.
