McFarlane Toys has made dragons from licenses like Game of Thrones before, but the official McFarlane Dragons line has traditionally remained separate. Instead, it consisted entirely of original Todd McFarlane designs. That changes, however, with new Smaug and Horntail figures.
Totally Fire
Smaug is technically a character from The Hobbit (book and movies), but his figure here bears the Lord of the Rings brand. Though he’s ostensibly based on the movies, he’s also a lot redder than the lighting made him look onscreen, and colored more like the book. These details might bother the hardcore fan, but for those who just want a nifty dragon, there he is.
The Hungarian Horntail from the Harry Potter/Wizarding World series looks more like what we remember, with a golden egg and chain on its base. If you want to make the argument that it’s a wyvern rather than a dragon, understand that the McFarlane Dragons line cast that aside from the get-go, many waves back. Take it up with director David Yates if you must.
Neither dragon features articulation — for once, these are billed as PVC statues, as opposed to other non-poseable McFarlane statues that are still called figures (probably a licensing requirement). Each dragon figure is 11 inches long and comes with a collector card. Look to pay about $50 for each one.
Expect other fire-breathers from significant properties to show up down the line if these do well. Diamond Select has action figure rights for HBO’s House of the Dragon, but have they locked up “PVC statues”? We shall see. Winter is coming, after all.
