It’s a natural fit that a game that can be enhanced with the use of miniatures would work well with a toy that can be used to create miniature dioramas and adventures. One might wonder why it took LEGO so long to see the potential in a Dungeons & Dragons collaboration — but perhaps it took modern toy business trends, in which Hasbro happily licenses out the properties it owns to other toy companies who do certain things better. (Let us never speak again of Kre-O, Hasbro’s ill-fated attempt to compete in the brick-building space.)

LEGO will be releasing a full-on series of blind-bagged D&D minifigs in September, but first comes the Red Dragon’s Tale set, created by 32-year-old fan Lucas Bolt on LEGO Ideas. As with any LEGO Ideas creation, the final design has been modified based on licensing and safety restrictions, and perhaps even the addition of new parts, which LEGO Ideas rules forbid.
As the company describes it, “The 3,745-piece set is incredibly detailed featuring a tavern with a removable roof, so you can see inside to the upper level. The set also features a dungeon and a tower. Also included are six LEGO minifigures – Orc Rogue, Gnome Fighter, Elf Wizard, and Dwarf Cleric, plus brick-built monsters, such as a beholder, an owlbear, and a displacer beast. Also featured is the giant Cinderhowl red dragon that builders can wrap around the tower.” They buried the lead by not mentioning the gelatinous cube, but it’s there too — although not so gelatinous, in hard plastic bricks. Sorry, barefoot dads.
