This is because the gap between its first two movies was 5 years due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, a sequel might not take that long to develop and could likely be out by 2028 or 2029. It is to be noted that Netflix hasn’t officially announced a third movie being in development as of yet. However, there are chances of it happening, as The Old Guard 2 ended on a cliffhanger.

In an interview with Looper in 2022, Greg Rucka, writer of The Old Guard movies, revealed that he had planned to create a trilogy. He said, “There is a complete three-part story that can be told. God willing, if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again.’ There’s more to tell, and there are questions that we want to answer.” Per this comment, if the second installment performs well, fans can look forward to another movie.
The Old Guard 2 director, Mahoney, recently revealed in an interview with The Direct that she will not return to helm the sequel, if it ever happens. She also doesn’t know if there are any discussions for another movie. Stating her reason for sitting out the third installment, she said, “The duration of this film took me from other projects I have, so I am legally obliged to some other projects. So, I will be for the next six, seven years, on some other jobs.”
However, she remains hopeful that another director will take the unannounced sequel in an interesting direction. “Someone else will take that mantle in a wonderful, exciting way, and I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but I know it’ll be great, and it’ll be fun, and it will be with great regard and care for the audience, and I will be eagerly awaiting it,” she added.
