Sandman Season 2 Volume 1’s ending put Dream in a complicated position as he had to make a devastating choice regarding his son, Orpheus. The saga went on for some time, with Orpheus wishing to die. But Dream was unable to grant his son’s wish.
So, did Dream kill Orpheus at the end of Sandman Season 2 volume 1? Here’s a complete breakdown.
Did Dream kill Orpheus in Netflix’s Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1?
300 years ago in the narrative, Dream’s brother, Destruction, abdicated his realm, leaving Orpheus as the only one who could locate him. The fifth episode of The Sandman Season 2 revealed that Orpheus was reduced to a severed head after the Sisters of the Frenzy dismembered him. He turned to the group to attain his wish of dying after Dream refused to grant it. Orpheus longed to be reunited with his deceased wife, Eurydice.
After this event, Orpheus begged his father to end his life, but Dream could not bring himself to do it. Instead, Dream left Orpheus in the care of an order of priests on the island and promised not to meet Orpheus again.
But Dream had to reach out to Orpheus this season to locate Destruction. Following this, Dream owed a boon to Orpheus. Orpheus asked Dream to grant him the gift of death. Dream finally killed Orpheus, even though he did not wish to.
“It’s huge,” Ruairi O’Conner said to Tudum about the death of Orpheus, “It’s this thing that Orpheus has been chasing after for 2,000 years — to not exist. It’s not great living as a disembodied head, and, at this point, I think it’s about knowing the relief that he’s going to get.”
This took a toll on Dream as he returned to his realm and mourned in silence. This was also the first time he was seen crying.
