Legendary and AfterShock! Adapting Image’s God Country

Legendary Entertainment and AfterShock! Media have optioned Image Comics’ fantasy series God Country. Nerdist reports that the film adaptation will be penned by the series’ writer, Donny Cates, who created the book with artist Geoff Shaw. In addition to the creator-owned God Country, Cates has become one of the most noteworthy writers for Marvel at the moment with acclaimed runs on Doctor Strange and Venom. He and Shaw recently collaborated on Thanos Wins, and the duo will also be relaunching the Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series in 2019.

Cates took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm for the upcoming project: “So yeah. GOD COUNTRY is going to be a movie. And I’m writing it. And yes, I’m freaking the hell out too. Thank you guys for reading and supporting our weird little Texas/Kirby Gods story. Now I’m off to go write it. Again. #TexasForever #ComeAndTakeIt”

God Country began publishing in January 2017, and it centers on Emmet Quinlan, “an old widower rattled by dementia, [who] isn’t just a problem for his children—his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home—as well as the surrounding West Texas town—a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is being overseen by Legendary’s Jon Silk and Jay Ashenfelter along with AfterShock’s Lee and Jon Kramer. Are you a fan of the God Country series?
