Last year, Marvel began campaigning to get Black Panther a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. That quest ultimately paid off, and Black Panther became the first superhero film to be nominated for the Oscars’ biggest prize. Green Book was named this year’s Best Picture, but that doesn’t mean Black Panther walked away empty handed.
Black Panther tied with Green Book and Roma for 3 Oscars at the Academy Awards. Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart shared Black Panther‘s Oscar for Best Production Design. Ruth E. Carter’s lush costume designs for the tribes of Wakanda and beyond earned her the Best Costume Design award. Finally, Ludwig Göransson won Best Original Score for his musical contribution to Black Panther.

Marvel Studios may not have landed the Best Picture Oscar, but Black Panther‘s nomination gave Marvel the recognition it craved. The only other Marvel Studios film up for an award this year was Avengers: Infinity War in the Best Visual Effects category. But it lost to First Man. Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was also a big winner at the Oscars. It overcame Pixar’s Incredibles 2 and Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet to take the upset win for Best Animated Feature.
