Shazam! Falls To Number 2, Captain Marvel Rises To Number 4 At the Box Office

The two week reign of Shazam! has come to an end. The James Wan produced horror film, The Curse of La Llorona, took Easter weekend with $26.5 million. Not only was that enough for #1, it also exceeded the film’s tracking by $10 million. Shazam! remained in contention with $17.3 million in the #2 slot. That brings its domestic total to $121.3 million.

Breakthrough opened in the third slot, with $11.1 million. But the biggest surprise of the weekend was Captain Marvel‘s resurgence. Marvel’s most recent film jumped from number 6 to number 4 with $9.1 million. That brings Captain Marvel over the $400 million domestic mark. Presumably, that rise was fueled by the immanent arrival of Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel could even remain in the top five next weekend, after Endgame opens. This also means that Wonder Woman‘s solo superheroine domestic record, $412 million, may fall after all.

Little rounded out the top five with $8.4 million. Disney’s Dumbo came in at #6 with $6.8 million, which was good enough to raise it past the $100 million mark. Pet Sematary ($4.8 million), Missing Link ($4.3 million), and Us ($4.2 million) took numbers 7 through 9, respectively.

Unfortunately, there’s not good news for the Hellboy reboot. It dropped from number 3 to number 10, with $3.8 million for the weekend. That’s a 68% decline from its tepid $12 million opening, and not good enough to keep the franchise going. It’s unlikely that we’ll see another Hellboy film in the near future.
