Over the years, the MCU has developed a reputation for casually inserting pop culture references into its films. Avengers: Endgame is certainly no exception. Tony Stark was able to sneak in a cheeky Big Lebowski name drop. However, the movie’s story also gave the filmmakers the opportunity to reference other sci-fi films of a similar flavor. One of these movies was the quintessential time travel flick: Back to the Future.
The Hollywood Reporter recently asked Back to the Future screenwriter Bob Gale what he thought of Endgame’s references to his films. And he couldn’t resist adding a joke of his own.
“I was delighted to learn from Endgame that all of the Marvel superheroes are fans of Back to the Future,” said Gale. “I knew our movie had been seen in almost every part of our world, but I had no idea we’d been playing in other parts of the multi-verse too.”

With Endgame plowing through box-office records, millions of people are also picking up on the nod to Marty McFly’s adventures. This also prompted Gale to humorously suggest that he deserves a cut of the movie’s profits. However, he might have some trouble collecting that debt.
“Now I need to find out if we’re owed some money from those multi-verse theatrical runs,” said Gale. “And if not, why my contract didn’t cover those territories!”
