There’s going to be a showdown at the box office in 2021 between dueling franchises and their respective reboot films. Via Deadline, Warner Bros. has set a date for the Mortal Kombat reboot produced by James Wan. The video game inspired film will arrive on March 5, 2021; the same day that Sony plans to release its Masters of the Universe reboot.
First-time director Simon McQuoid is set to helm the new Mortal Kombat. The original movie premiered in 1995 and garnered a strong response at the box office. However, the 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was a bomb. Thus far, no casting picks have been announced for the new Mortal Kombat. Production has reportedly begun on the film in South Australia.
Masters of the Universe has lined up Noah Centineo to play He-Man in the reboot. Adam and Aaron Nee will direct the film and collaborate on the script with writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The previous 1987 live-action movie failed to hit at the time, but has gained cult appreciation since.

Why are head-to-head opening weekend battles between fan-favorite properties usually avoided? Because one franchise will inevitably come in second as a clear winner emerges. Last December, Aquaman opened against both Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns, and Aquaman easily outpaced both films. Bumblebee‘s box office was particularly affected, as it came in at #3. Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios briefly teased a head-to-head fight a few years ago, before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice moved away from Captain America: Civil War.
