Captain Marvel Director Shares How Nick Fury Almost Lost His Eye

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel!

MCU devotees were undoubtedly excited when they heard that Captain Marvel would feature a young Nick Fury. The film gave Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character his most screen time since Avengers: Age of Ultron. More importantly, it was also expected to reveal how the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D. lost his eye. The movie ultimately did answer this question. But to a few fans, it left a lot to be desired.

Some viewers found the revelation that Fury’s eye was scratched out by Goose the Flerken cat to be too jokey. Others argued that Fury’s iconic line in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (“Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye”) no longer carries the same weight. But according to co-director Ryan Fleck (via Comic Book Movie), the filmmakers wanted to subvert moviegoers’ expectations.

“There were definitely a lot of discussions and that was not the first idea on the table,” said Fleck. “You’re probably going to ask me what some of the other ideas were and I don’t know if I can tell you that, not because I’m hiding anything, but because there were just so many absurd ideas we had. There was a strong contender for a while that a fight with the Skrulls seemed like the most obvious choice but then the more we thought about it, it just became too obvious.”

“Since this is just as much Nick Fury’s origin story as Captain Marvel’s, we thought that it would be a fun piece of his backstory that moving forward, he was [creating] a new narrative for himself that he didn’t really talk about but he was fine with people wanting to muse about a potentially more serious way he could have lost his eye,” added Fleck.
