Warning: There are massive spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Homecoming!
Marvel Studios movies tend to value their surprises, and Spider-Man: Far From Home was no exception. While the mid-credits scene teased a massive upheaval for Peter Parker, the post-credits scene was even wilder. Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Soren (Sharon Blynn) revealed that they had impersonated Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) for the entire story. As the Skrulls filled in for Fury and Hill on Earth, the real Nick Fury was off on a Skrull ship somewhere in space.
Far From Home director Jon Watts recently spoke with Collider about the post-credits scene, and he revealed that he almost put that scene in the movie itself.
“We had talked about including it as a body of the movie, but it made the most sense to be the very last little con in this movie about con men,” noted Watts. “Just one last little reversal. And we went back and forth as to whether or not we really wanted to do that or not, because it’s such a crazy twist that makes you want to watch everything again.”

“Once you realize that Nick and Maria aren’t Nick and Maria, you can enjoy the movie in a completely different way,” continued Watts. “Everything they say takes on a different meaning when you realize that they’re not actually who they say they are.”
Watts didn’t elaborate on the implications for the larger MCU or explain what Fury is doing on the Skrull ship. Fury clearly isn’t a captive, and he even seems to be in command of the ship. The one thing that Watts admitted is that he wanted Far From Home‘s post-credits scene to have more impact than Captain America’s “Patience” PSA at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“After we pulled such a gag on the last one with the Captain America thing about patience, I felt, ‘Let’s do some real tags this time,’” said Watts.
