Warnings: there are spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead!
Robert Downey Jr.’s run with Marvel came to an end after more than a decade of him wearing Tony Stark’s shoes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reflecting on his stint under the Marvel Studios banner in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Downey Jr. confessed that it sometimes seemed like he was the character he was portraying.
“Initially, by creating and associating and synergizing with Tony Stark and the Marvel Universe … and being a good company man, but also being a little off kilter, being creative and getting into all these other partnerships, it was a time when … what do they say? Owners start looking like their pets,” Downey said. “I am not my work, I am not what I did with that studio. I am not that period of time that I spent playing this character. And it sucks, because the kid in all of us wants to be like, ‘No. It’s always going to be summer camp and we’re all holding hands and singing ‘Kumbaya’.”

Then the actor reflected on Tony Stark’s arc from the beginnings in that cave in Iron Man to meeting his destiny while facing Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
“For me the end of this run with Marvel is, oh yeah, it’s a complete 180,” Downey added. “It started off with someone who is absolutely self-centered, has more money that they can ever spend, is spiritually dead, and has no idea that they are about to go through a crucible that is going to put them in a position to be at service to the community. Boom.”
“The last [Iron Man suit] is not designed to be able to do its job and have you make it past this. That’s the great Joseph Campbell mythology of it,” Downey concluded.
