Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home!
As nearly everyone suspected, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio turned out to have a nefarious agenda in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The Elementals were just an elaborate con to fool Peter Parker and Nick Fury. Quentin Beck appeared as Mysterio in the very first scene in the movie and seemingly didn’t return until Peter arrived in Europe. But an eagle-eyed fan just noticed that Mysterio was keeping tabs on Peter right when he first landed in Venice.
Via Comic Book Resources, a fan by the name of UpToTASK made the observation on Twitter. The pictures show Beck in a tourist’s outfit while subtly following Peter at the airport.

The third image does appear to confirm Gyllenhaal was the tourist in that scene. This means that the water Elemental attack wasn’t random at all, since Beck knew exactly where Peter was at the time.

To erase any lingering doubts about his appearance there, Gyllenhaal confirmed it with a recent Instagram post. Gyllenhaal posted a new image that features him wearing the tourist’s clothing. He even says it’s his “favorite look” from the film.
