Depending on who you ask, Rian Johnson is either the best or the worst thing that happened to Star Wars. Critics lavished The Last Jedi with praise when it hit theaters in 2017. However, the larger fanbase had a more divided opinion of the film. That polarization has only continued as Johnson plans his own Star Wars trilogy. But that hasn’t stopped the writer and director from going his own way.
While speaking with Observer, Johnson explained how he plans to craft the new films’ overarching story. Additionally, he confirmed one key way that his movies will stand apart from previous entries in the franchise.
“I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting and then figure out what it’s going to be,” said Johnson. “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

Since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is being touted as the finale of the Skywalker Saga, making Johnson’s trilogy a clean break from the past makes sense. Rogue One managed to succeed in 2016 with a cast largely made up of original characters. Plus, the Last Jedi naysayers may respond better to films that feature all-new heroes and villains.
