Birds Of Prey’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead Talks About Playing Huntress

While Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn appears to be the focus of the Birds of Prey movie, it’s not all about her. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress will also be teaming up with Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary to protect a young woman named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). Winstead recently shared some insight into her take on the Huntress while speaking with The Wrap.

“She’s kind of an odd character,” said Winstead. “She’s weird, and funny and awkward. You sort of get to tell this story of this girl who grew up training to be an assassin and didn’t ever have friends, and doesn’t know how to fit in socially, and doesn’t really know anything other than how to kill.”

“We got to sort of play around with that in ways that are in ways that were both sort of sometimes disturbing and sometimes really funny,” continued Winstead. “To get to play with that kind of a character was a really great opportunity.”

Winstead’s Huntress is based upon her post-Crisis incarnation, Helena Bertinelli. In 1989, Joey Cavalieri and artist Joe Staton re-envisioned Huntress as the daughter of a mob boss who was hellbent on avenging her family’s death. She also operated out of Gotham City and often butted heads with Batman and his allies. In the Birds of Prey comics, Huntress eventually joined forces with Black Canary under the leadership of Oracle.

Ewan McGregor will play the film’s primary villain Black Mask. Chris Messina co-stars as the serial killer Victor Zsasz, with Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Warner Bros. will release Birds of Prey on February 7, 2020.
