The Birds of Prey movie’s version of Helena Bertinelli may not have been every fan’s favorite version of Huntress. But few would dispute that Mary Elizabeth Winstead committed to the character, who walked a fine line between homage and parody. The stereotypically “grimdark” avenger in a brightly colored, uplifting feminist superhero film, she stole every scene in which she appeared. By the movie’s end, she even got a new costume vaguely recognizable as comic book-ish. But will that be all for this Huntress?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about her new action movie Kate, Winstead expressed her hopes that we’ll see more. “It would really be so much fun. I was so happy that I was able to bring a bit of humor to that character,” she says. “When you’re playing an assassin, it can be so easy for things to get so self-serious, but it was great to be able to have a little bit of fun with her. So I would love to get to do more of that.”

However, she knows the comics well enough to realize other Huntresses exist. “So there’s lots of different places she could be taken. If that’s with me, that would be really cool, and I’d love to see where that goes. But I’m also happy to watch whatever direction it goes in.” So far, however, Warner Bros. have told her nothing — except about her one-time costar. “I’ve genuinely not heard any plans. I don’t have any details about anything that’s in the works or anything like that,” she says. “I know that Jurnee [Smollett] is doing a Black Canary movie, which I’m so excited for. She’s amazing and she’s going to kill that, so I can’t wait to see where that goes.
She adds, “I don’t know if that’s going to involve Huntress or not, but I love that character and I love the version that we were able to create in Birds of Prey.”
